Other topics to be addressed include the city and mortuary practices, health and sanitation, utopias and imagined cities, and the archaeology of disaster. While previous work at sites in New Orleans and Louisiana will form a focal point for the class, it will also encompass African diaspora archaeology throughout the Atlantic World, from the slave port of Elmina in West Africa, to the African Burial Ground in NYC, to the quilombos of Brazil. Contemporary issues of colonialism, contact, change, continuity, resistance, and cultural survival, as well as issues of human rights and the destruction of the Amazonian rain forest will be examined.
