Justice Studies, M.A.

The interdisciplinary MA in Justice Studies, housed in COLAEHD, prepares students to advance justice in their communities and in broader society. Through training in empirical methods, theory, and scholarly synthesis, students develop the capacity to engage in critical dialogue that promotes justice. The program consists of core courses in justice theory and research methods; an individualized plan of study related to one of four concentrations; and a comprehensive exam.
 

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) for MA in Justice Studies

Students will demonstrate knowledge of major theoretical frameworks around concepts of justice and injustice.

Students will demonstrate facility with diverse methods of research.

Students will demonstrate expertise in a selected area of justice.

Admissions

Application to the M.A. is currently limited only to students who are enrolled in the Ph.D. in Justice Studies and wish to switch degree plans.

Degree Requirements

Course Requirements

The minimum requirement for a master’s degree at the University of New Orleans is 30 semester hours of graduate work. Graduate credit is awarded for courses numbered 5000-level and above. As a minimum, a student must earn at least half of the required semester hours of work in courses numbered 6000 or above.

Concentration Courses


A minimum of two additional concentration courses (6 credits) focused on one of the following subfields:

  • Social Justice
  • Environmental Justice
  • Educational Justice
  • Criminal Justice

These will be pre-approved by the Graduate Coordinator.

Independent Study
No more than 20% of the total hours required for a degree may be satisfied by coursework completed as independent study. Research conducted towards an independent study course should be distinct from research conducted towards completion of the Comprehensive Exam.

Comprehensive Exam


As a capstone, students complete the standard Comprehensive Exam for Justice Studies. They may enroll in JUST 7040 - Examination or Report Only   if needed.
