Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) for BS Secondary Education

Aligned with Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC)

The secondary teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teachers and creates learning experiences that make the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content. (InTASC Standard 4: Content Knowledge)

The secondary teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues. (InTASC Standard 5: Application of Content)

The secondary teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context. Requirements for Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education

Certification in Grades 6 - 12

The curricula in secondary education have five components:

  1. general education,
  2. focus area(s),
  3. knowledge of the learner and the learning environment,
  4. methodology and teaching, and
  5. special education.

Secondary Teaching (Grades 6 - 12) certification are as offered include:

  1. Biology
  2. Chemistry
  3. Earth Science
  4. English
  5. Math
  6. Social Studies

NOTE: CHEM 1001  AND URBN 1000  are not acceptable General Degree Requirements for a Secondary Education degree. Courses can be used for free electives only. Not all Secondary Education Programs have free electives.
